Repairing Student Misconceptions in Heat Transfer Using Inquiry-based Activities

چکیده
52 Anyone who’s taught for more than a week knows that students don’t learn everything that we teach. While we accept that students will either fail to absorb or subsequently forget many details, we hope that our students learn the “big ideas” or concepts from each course. Unfortunately, extensive research suggests that many science[1-6] and engineering[7-11] classes do little to foster deep conceptual understanding. Traditional instruction is particularly ineffective for promoting significant conceptual change.

متن کاملMini workshop - P - 12 engineering education: Using Engineering Teaching Kits to address student misconceptions in science
The primary goal of this mini-workshop is to introduce participants to practical, validated methods of identifying and remediating student misconceptions concerning scientific concepts through the use of Engineering Teaching Kits (ETKs). ETKs are selfcontained standards-based units grounded in the constructivist philosophy of education and the principles of guided inquiry and active learning. T...

AI systems and human novices share a difficult problem: repairing incorrect models to improve expertise. For people, the use of analogies during instruction can augment the repair of science knowledge. Enabling AI systems to do the same involves several challenges: representing knowledge in commonsense science domains; constructing analogies to transfer knowledge; and flexibly revising domain k...

متن کاملHeat Conduction in Spherical Composite Vessels
This paper presents an exact analytical solution for two-dimensional conductive heat transfer in spherical composite pressure vessels .The vessels are in spherical shape and fibers are winded in circumferential direction. The analytical solution is obtained under the general boundary conditions which consist of convection, conduction and radiation inside/outside of vessel. The heat transfer equ...
